and walking/running/biking path (42%).  A minor need was indicated for senior citizen
activities (36%), and cross country skiing (36%).  Recreational activities felt to be “OK
as is” were athletic fields (43%), ATV and off road vehicles (63%), fishing (48%),
golfing (64%), hunting (54%), public parks (44%), public boating facilities (50%),
skateboarding (52%), snowmobiling (65%), swimming (54%), and tennis/basketball
(42%).  There were differences in opinions about a community center, hiking, ice skating,
playgrounds, and picnic areas.  For these recreational uses, participants were split as to
whether there was a strong or minor need, or was OK as is.
17.  There was an overwhelming level of support for endorsing town-sponsored
preservation techniques that would lead to the protection of open spaces, working farms,
small farms historic, buildings and sites, scenic landscapes, and critical environmental
sites.  All of these received over 75% support.  Historic buildings and sites received the
highest level of support with 87% of participants indicating that they would endorse
protection activities.
18. When asked if they would favor additional town spending to accomplish the items in
#17, there was again a lot of support.  From 42% to 50% of participants would support
using a mix of public tax dollars and private funds to protect those resources.  About 35%
supported that mix of funding for small and recreational farm protection.  Support was
slightly less using only private money or grant funding.  There was little support for using
only taxpayers money (less than 9%) although 19% said that they would support using all
tax dollar money to protect critical environmental sites.  For those that do not support
additional town spending to accomplish this, more people were not in favor of protecting
small and recreational farms (22%) than the other resources (ranged from 10 to 16%).
Overall, there was support for using town funding and the participants favored use of a
mix of tax and private funding to accomplish that.
